Link-A-Loons would be best for this lesson since they have a stinger and can have strings on both ends. Also lower ceilings are better.
Take half the balloons and fill with helium and fill the other half with air. Tie down the helium balloons and suspend the air filled balloons so that they are all on the same level. Add strings to both ends so that it is not immediately obvious which balloons are which. Label the strings “Lies” and a pair of scissors “Truth”. Place the scissors in a Bible in your Bible reference and you are ready to present the teaching.
“All of these balloons look alike. Yet some are quite different. Some have helium and some just have regular air. Why are they all at about the same level? That’s right the strings are holding them. They are either holding them back, or holding them up. That is just like a lie. Some people tell lies to try to hold others back or even get them in trouble. Some tell lies to try to make themselves look important.”
“What we need is some truth”. Open the Bible and read the Scripture ‘You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.’ Start cutting the strings. Alternate whether you cut from the top or bottom first. I like to end with one last helium balloon being held down by a string. Talk about how Satan is the Father of lies and he wants to tie us down in sin. Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. For the last helium balloon invite a child up and have them repeat the scripture and tell them when they say the word free, they are to cut the string.
Obviously this could be adapted to other teachings as well. This lesson was inspired by John Holmes object lesson called the “Gumball Machine.”
